Pour une femme de mon nom, Marquise's aria from La Fille du Régiment

Pour une femme de mon nom, For a woman of my [lofty] name,
Quel temps hélas! le temps de guerre! what times these are, alas, the times of war.
Aux granduers on ne pense guère... One hardly thinks of greatness,
Rien n'est sacré pour le canon! nothing is sacred to the cannons.
Aussi, vraiment, je vis à peine.... Also, truly, I am barely alive,
Je dépéris, je le sens bien... I'm crumbling, I can tell,
Jusqu'aux vapeurs, et la migraine, I have vapours and a migraine.
Les ennemis, hélas!, ne respectent rien!	The enemies, alas, respect nothing.

Les Francais, chacun me l'assure, The French, everyone assures me,
Sont une troupe de brigands... are a band of highway men.
Pour peu qu'on ait de la figure, If one is at all pretty,
Ils deviennent entreprenants les brigands.	they become daring highway men.
Aussi, je frémis quand j'y pense! I tremble when I think about it.
Mon sort je le connais trop bien... I know all too well my fate.
La beauté, les moeurs, l'innocence... Beauty, manners, innocence...
Ces gens-là ne respectent rien! those people don't respect anything!
