Donations to the Aria Database

The Aria Database is a collection of information about opera and operatic arias. Besides providing basic information about each aria, the Database includes translations for many arias and aria texts for those that are not affected by copyright restrictions. The Database also provides access to a collection of operatic MIDI files to give visitors an idea of what each aria sounds like. Currently, the Database holds information on the complete operatic aria collections of Mozart, Verdi, Berlioz, Wagner, and Puccini as well as the partial collections of over 50 other composers.

Purpose of the Database

The Database is designed to be useful for both singers and opera fans. For performers, the Database provides all the information you would need to know to prepare an aria, including synopsis, range and tessitura, voice part and fach, role, and where to find the sheet music. For music lovers that prefer to sing along with recordings, the Database provides the words of the aria as well as where it happens in the opera and where you could find more recordings of the aria. The MIDIs and translations are useful to both singers and listeners; performers can use MIDIs to help learn notes and rhythms while others can be just a click away from their favorite arias and translations are useful to anyone who wants to know exactly what an aria is about.

Use of Materials on the Database

Please note that all materials on the Database have been the result of someone's hard work. Except where noted, text in the Database is copyrighted by me, Robert Glaubitz, and should only be used outside of personal use with my permission. The translations and MIDI files are the copyrighted work of many contributors whose valuable work has made this Database what it is today. You may use their MIDIs and translations for your personal use but please respect their rights and ask permission before you put a translation on a program or a MIDI on your website. In general, if you wish to use a translation in a recital program or a publication or if you wish to use a MIDI on a website or a CD, you must ask the contributor for their permission or else you could be held accountable legally. Every contributor I have worked with is very nice and will probably have no problem with your request!
